Entrance Loan Counseling

Before receiving a student loan, borrowers must complete an online entrance counseling session. This interactive counseling session will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a student loan borrower. The online entrance counseling session will take you approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. You will want to follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Studentaid.gov (using your FSA ID username and password)
  2. Under "Loans and Grants," click on "Loan Entrance Counseling"
  3. In the Loan Entrance Counseling section, then scroll to "I am a Graduate or Professional Student" and click the "Start" button. (Note: if you are seeking a teaching licensure only, click "Start" within "I am an Undergraduate Student")
  4. If we are not listed in your "Associated Schools" section, select the "University of Saint Thomas" in Minnesota and click on "Continue" (The school code of G02345 with 2115 Summit Ave, St. Paul, MN 55105-1096 will appear.)
  5. Select "Start" to begin the module.

Master Promissory Note (MPN)

In order to borrow a Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan and/or a Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, you must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for each loan type. The MPN is a legally binding agreement to repay your loan to the U.S. Department of Education. Completing this requirement will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

  1. Log in to Studentaid.gov (using your FSA ID username and password)
  2. Under "Loans and Grants," Click on "Master Promissory Note (MPN)"
  3. For Graduate and Professional students: Click "Select MPN Type," then:
    • To complete the MPN for Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan(s) click "Start" in the "MPN For Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans."
    • To complete the MPN for Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loans click "Start" in the "MPN For Direct PLUS Loans."
