Project QUIT - Nicotine Cessation
Project QUIT is a FREE, 6-week wellness coaching and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) program for St. Thomas students and employees.
Millions have quit smoking, vaping, and stopped using e-cigarettes, and you can too! There is no better time – even if you've thought about quitting before, tried to quit, or successfully quit in the past and started again.
The Nicotine Cessation program consists of:
- 6-week wellness coaching (weekly sessions)
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy
- Healthcare provider check-up
Wellness Coaching combined with Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) has been shown to be twice as effective as using NRT or coaching alone. For those who smoke, vape, or use smokeless tobacco products and are ready to quit – the CWB is here to help!
Program participants can start at any time and will be supported for 6 weeks with individual Wellness Coaching, free nicotine replacement product(s), ongoing medical and behavioral monitoring, and group support when appropriate. Participants will meet with both a Wellness Coach and a Nurse Practitioner who can customize the program that is right for each individual. Longer term coaching, counseling, and ongoing medical care are all available beyond the 6-week program for those that need it.
The Center for Well-Being gratefully acknowledges the Michael "Carson" Larson Memorial Fund for making this program possible.

How to Handle Withdrawal
- Exercise - Physical activity is a reliable way to crush a craving. Even a short walk can do the trick, as can something fun like playing ultimate frisbee, taking a swing at batting cages, or doing yoga in your bedroom.
- Use a distraction - Cravings will pass if you can give them a minute or two. These can include things like reading a blog, listening to music, playing a game, solving a puzzle, or doodling.
- Set up your environment for success - Create a temptation-free home, such as throwing out anything that reminds you of smoking or vaping. Make sure your room, backpacks, purses, and pockets are free of any cigarettes or e-cigarettes and lighters. Let your friends know you’re trying to quit so they don’t bring items around you that could trigger a craving.
- Find stress solutions - Many people turn to vaping or cigarettes when they’re stressed out, which sets up a vicious cycle of cravings. Examine your stress-coping skills with a counselor or wellness coach.
- Celebrate your accomplishments - Recognizing and celebrating accomplishments when you’re quitting can boost resistance to stress and cravings. Even making it through your first few hours is a big accomplishment.
