World Language and Cultures Education (K-12)

Major in French (K-12), German (K-12), or Spanish (K-12) with a Co-Major in K-12 World Language and Cultures

Note: Students wishing to be licensed to teach World Language and Cultures K-12 in the state of Minnesota must demonstrate advanced level speaking proficiency (as defined in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages [ACTFL] Proficiency Guideline) in both English and in the target language.

Overview of the World Language and Culture K-12 degree

Core Secondary Education Requirements:

All majors (Spanish, French and German) in World Language Education need to take the following

Block 1

• EDUC 210 Education: Issues and Policies (4 credits)

Block 2

• EDUC 329 Diversity and Cultural Competence (4 credits)
• EDUC 330 Psychology for Teaching and Learning (4 credits)
• EDUC 332 Field Experience II: Learning & Teaching (0 credit)

Block 3

• EDUC 347 Field Experience III: World Language (0 credit)
• EDUC 355 Reading for the 5-12 Teacher (4 credits)
• EDUC 380 Curriculum and Instruction: World Language (4 credit)

Block 4

• EDUC 431 Use of Technology for Instruction (4 credits) or EDUC 432 Learning Design with Technology in International Contexts (4 credits)
• EDUC 460 Clinical Practice: Student Teaching and Seminar (10 credits)
  
  

A major in World Language Education: Spanish leads to a degree and teaching license. Students with this major will be qualified to teach K-12 Spanish.

Additional coursework is required to earn a major in Spanish.

Declaring your major: To declare this major, you should start with K-12 World Languages
and Culture and then find Spanish (K-12).

Majors must complete the Core Secondary Education Requirements (Block 1-4).

World Language & Culture Requirements- Spanish

32 credits numbered SPAN 300 and above.

All students must take:

• SPAN 300 Advanced Spanish Grammar (4 credits)
• SPAN 301 Advanced Written Spanish & Culture (4 credits)
• SPAN 305 Spanish Oral Expression & Culture (4 credits)

Plus:

• SPAN 315 Hispanic Linguistics (4 credits)
• SPAN 331 Survey of Spanish Culture & Civilization - or - SPAN 332 Survey of Latin American Culture & Civilization (4 credits each)
• SPAN 335 Intro to Spanish Literature (4 credits)
• An elective 340 or higher or other elective as approved by the chair of Modern and Classical Languages.

A major in World Language and Culture: French Education leads to a degree and teaching license. Students with this major will be qualified to teach K-12 French.

Candidates must earn a major in French and fulfill all requirements for the French major. This double major can be completed in four years.

Majors must complete the Core Secondary Education Requirements (Block 1-4).

World Language & Culture Requirements- French

Candidates must earn a major in French and must successfully complete an Oral Proficiency Interview (ACTFL) prior to Clinical Practice.

28 credits numbered FREN 300 or above with a minimum of 8 credits in each of the following areas:

• Oral and Written Language:
• FREN 300 Advanced Oral & Written French I
• FREN 371 French Conversation
• Culture and Civilization:
• FREN 311 French Civilization I
• FREN 312 French Civilization II
• FREN 3xx/4xx culture-focused topics courses

Literature:

• FREN 301 French Poetry
• FREN 309 Introduction to French Language
• FREN 402 The French Novel

A major in World Language and Culture: German Education leads to a degree and teaching license. Students with this major will be qualified to teach K-12 German.

Candidates must earn a major in German and fulfill all requirements for the German major. This double major can be completed in four years.

Declaring your major: To declare this major, you should start with World Language and Culture K-12 Education (ESWL) and then find German. You should also choose to add a major in German.

Majors must complete the Core Secondary Education Requirements (Block 1-4).

World Language & Culture Requirements- German

28 credits numbered GERM 300 and above + 4 credits in a neighboring field with a German cultural component.

A minimum of 6 credits in German Literature.

No more than 12 credits may be in the area of advanced language skills.
