We live in a multimedia world. The digital media arts degree program at the University of St. Thomas will prepare you for a career in a variety of fields, including media production, web design, visual design and emerging media technologies.
Our program will build your skills and knowledge about the planning, creation, influence and critique of media content. Our program draws on multiple disciplines such as journalism, English and music to develop the abilities you will need to work on film, television and computer-based audiovisual media projects. Our alumni go on to work as project managers, sound designers, screenwriters, film producers and so much more.
Throughout your time at St. Thomas, you will complete courses focusing on media theory and practice, digital imagery and sound, and visual media and production. You also have the choice of concentrating your major in media design or media production. Depending on your concentration, you will complete courses focusing on writing and designing for the web, audio production, videography and more.

Caroline “C.C.” Rode graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2015. She is an award-winning producer. She has worked as a news producer in Texas, Oregon and Minnesota. After nearly three years in the KSTP newsroom, she joined the Twin Cities Live team in July 2021, expanding her TV producer career. Outside of work she enjoys painting, working out, and volunteering with Meals on Wheels. At the University of St. Thomas, C.C. was involved in Residence Life, TommieMedia, PULSE, and Campus Ministry
Bjorn Saterbak graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2015 with a B.A. in Communication and Journalism and a minor in Spanish. He is an Emmy-award winning TV producer. Currently, he works at Fox 9 KMSP in the Twin Cities as the producer of "Fox 9 Good Day," a lifestyle-focused talk show with the goal of sharing uplifting and positive stories. Bjorn was an integral part of launching the show in the fall of 2021. Before this, he was a producer with Fox 9 Morning News and WDIO-TV, the ABC affiliate in Duluth.
Jacob is a Visual Storyteller at KARE 11. Throughout his undergraduate career, Jacob gained a plethora of hands-on digital media experience by working with a variety of audio, camera and lighting equipment. He also became proficient in editing with training from his professors while learning the fundamentals of storytelling.
Sam has received comprehensive training to become a confident storyteller, editor and videographer. He learned to not only trust himself creatively, but to also appropriately use audiovisual equipment. These technical and creative skills led to him receiving the Crystal Pillar Award from the National Academy of Television.
We give you the tools and knowledge you need to work in a variety of different industries after graduation.
Our program offers scholarship opportunities to prospective students currently in high school, incoming first-year students and current students with a declared major in digital media arts or journalism.
This $2,000 scholarship is for incoming first-year students at St. Thomas. We award this based on their commitment to community service and career-related activities, academic merit and the promise of success in their career.
Application Deadline: March 3, 2022
The university awards one renewable, full-tuition scholarship each year to a first-year student who completed a ThreeSixty Journalism summer camp and intends to study a major from the digital media arts program. Candidates who will contribute diversity to St. Thomas and the department are given preference as well.
These scholarships are for current digital media arts, journalism or strategic communication majors. The annual award typically ranges from $600 to $3,000.
Several DIMA students have worked for the Playful Learning Lab to create fun, engaging and hands-on experiences for PK-12 students and educators.
Digital media arts students have traveled to and participated in the National Press Photographers Association Conference.
The Media Lab in the O'Shaughnessy Education Center (OEC) is equipped with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. OEC is also home to our multimedia studio and TommieMedia newsroom.
Sam used his technical skill and creative capacities to win a Crystal Pillar Award from the National Academy of Television.
In June 2017, Michael worked with Professor John Keston on a large scale Northern Spark project at the Weisman Art Museum.
Dr. Gregg researches the formation of attitudes and beliefs via media consumption.
Professor Keston has a combined background in music technology, new media and software development.
Dr. Anderson’s research focuses on video games, games culture, and design.
