Minor in Catholic Health Care Ethics

A minor in Catholic health care ethics at the University of St. Thomas will prepare you to meet the challenges facing today's health care systems by studying the long Catholic traditions of medical ethics and morals, including social, moral and political thought.

This minor examines a range of contemporary questions in clinical and organizational ethics that will serve your work as a future health care professional. You will learn to bring the Catholic tradition into constructive dialogue with other bioethical traditions, both religious and secular. You will also gain a solid understanding of the historical context in which Catholic health care and health care ethics developed in the United States.

    The minor is comprised of four courses, including a special section of a foundational theology course for students interested in health professions. You will also study the relationship between faith and health and take faith and ethics courses on the topics of social thought and bioethics.

    This minor provides opportunities to reflect critically on internships and community partnerships with health care providers and health care institutions, locally, regionally and internationally.

A minor in Catholic Heath Care Ethics gives students the basic competencies required for entry-level positions in ethics and/or mission integration units within both faith-based and secular health-care organizations, including Catholic hospitals.
