Academic advising is a teaching and learning process that involves students' personal academic records. For this reason, we are required to directly consult with students about their enrollment questions. Parents, family members and/or any other third party are encouraged to coach students about this advising conversation but they should not communicate on behalf of their student.

Tips for first year students

  • Enjoy moving through Registration Readiness and researching the class options and recommendations offered in the O&R Guide website.
  • It is essential to be flexible, as there are limited courses available to first year students. Students who are not able to enroll in the math, language, or other liberal arts courses of their choice will likely be able to register for many of these classes in future semesters.
  • It is natural and important for first year students to ask for advice from family members and friends about the class enrollment process, but it is even more important that they get the direct experience of working with the staff and faculty who are available to support them at St. Thomas. Doing so will build skills and confidence in making decisions. All details associated with this initial registration process fosters critical thinking, wise action, and skillful work, which are all part of the St. Thomas experience. Students' full engagement is what is essential for academic success.
  • For parents or family members following along in these modules: Thank you for your investment in your student's success. Remember that your best form of support is not to remove what you may see as obstacles based upon past experiences, but to provide the encouragement that your student needs to independently overcome those obstacles and succeed.
  • The most important thing to remember is that help is always available to those who seek it out!

After O&R Programs

  1. Beginning August 6, students will be allowed to make limited schedule changes via Murphy Online.
  2. Academic counselors will be available as needed to consult with students about schedule changes
  3. The following schedule changes should be made only after consulting with a St. Thomas advisor:
    • For students participating in a Living Learning Community: Please note that changing a class may affect your housing assignment.

    • The enrollment in Chemistry, Biology and Math courses all affect one another and are usually more complicated than they seem.

    • The logistics related to athletic practice schedules, music ensemble schedules, Living Learning Communities, and Common Good Learning Communities, etc. should be carefully considered before making schedule changes.
