Scholarships for Future Students

When it comes to academic quality, St. Thomas is ranked a Best Value in Education by U.S. News & World Report. In addition to providing an extraordinary education, we also make it attainable financially.

All first-time, first-year students admitted to St. Thomas are automatically considered for a St. Thomas scholarship – 97% receive one.

St. Thomas awards more than 9,200 scholarships totaling nearly $75 million to its 4-year undergraduate students each year. This includes 120 students receiving full-tuition scholarship awards.

Scholarships for Students with High Financial Need

Students who have high financial need are typically eligible for the Pell Grant or Minnesota State Grant. You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form or the Minnesota Dream Act Application, and apply for admission to St. Thomas, to be eligible for these scholarships.

Ciresi Walburn Leadership Fellows

The Ciresi Walburn Leadership Fellows is a cohort program designed to address barriers to success facing Black male students with high financial need, with a preference to first-generation college students. Up to 10 fellowships are awarded each year.

Amount: $50,000 over 4 years, plus mentorship, leadership development, and other supports.

Dease Scholarship Program

Ten first-year students with high financial need who attend a Twin Cities public/charter school or a MN Catholic high school are chosen each year to receive a full-tuition Dease Scholarship.

Amount: Full-tuition and required fees

Frey Legacy Scholarship

The Frey Legacy Scholarship is awarded to approximately 50-75 domestic first time, first year, with priority going to students with high financial need and under-represented students who are the first in their family to attend college.

Amount: up to $4,000 per year, for up to four years (provided the recipients continue to demonstrate financial need)

Frey Room and Board Grants

The Frey Room and Board Grants are awarded to approximately 25-30 domestic first time, first year students, with priority going to students with high financial need and under-represented students who are the first in their family to attend college.

Amount: variable, up to full cost of residence hall and meal plan, per year for up to two years

Kanthak Tuition and Room Grants

The Kanthak Tuition and Room Grants are awarded to approximately 30 new first time, first year students, with priority going to students with high financial need.

Amount for Kanthak Tuition Grant: $5,500 in Kanthak Tuition Grant funding per year for up to four years

Amount for Kanthak Room Grant: $4,500 in Kanthak Room Grant funding per year for up to two years

The Kanthak Grants are awarded in tandem.

Board of Trustees Academic Scholarship

Board of Trustee Scholarships are competitive awards that provide an additional discount on tuition based on a student's academic achievements, essay submitted and our strategic goals.

Amount: $2,000 - $4,000 per year

Eligibility: Prospective first-year students with a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.7.

Timing: We will begin reviewing completed applications on February 20, 2023. Additional applications will be considered until the Trustee's Scholarship funds are exhausted.

National Merit Scholarship Finalists

National Merit Scholarship Finalists who enroll at St. Thomas will be awarded funds in addition to any scholarships previously awarded by St. Thomas.

Amount: $10,000 per year in National Merit funds or related funds

Eligibility: Students selected as National Merit Finalists who declare St. Thomas as their first-choice institution with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and who qualify for either a college-sponsored award or a $2,500 National Merit single-payment award.

    The GHR Fellows program is a highly competitive, transformational undergraduate experience for students pursuing careers in business. Fellows receive full-tuition scholarships to the University of St. Thomas and customized programming designed to deliver leadership experiences – including global exposure through a fully funded J-Term study abroad experience.

    Amount: Full-tuition and required fees between St. Thomas and GHR funding

    Eligibility:

    • Prospective first-year students who have applied to St. Thomas
    • Intend to major in business
    • Cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.7
    • Embody the mission and values of the University of St. Thomas
    • Model the values of GHR by demonstrating that you are ethical, innovative, globally aware and engaged in your community

    These competitive scholarships are awarded by the Schulze School of Entrepreneurship to applicants with proven entrepreneurship potential who intend to major in Entrepreneurship. Multiple full-tuition scholarships will be awarded each year to qualified candidates.

    • Prospective first-year students who have applied to St. Thomas
    • Intend to major in Entrepreneurship

    Named in honor of Father James Whalen, long-time faculty member and department chair who specialized in Media Ethics, this scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit, demonstrated aptitude for communication, commitment to community service and career-related activities, and the promise of success in a journalism-related career.

    Amount: $2,000 per year

    Eligibility:

    • Prospective first-year students who have been admitted to St. Thomas
    • Intend to major in Journalism
    • Must enroll in one Journalism class for the fall semester of their first year.

    Amount: Up to $2,000 for the first year

    Eligibility:

    • Prospective first-year students who have been admitted to St. Thomas
    • Cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.3
    • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and leadership qualities
    • An interest in developing both spiritually and professionally
    • Hope to pursue a degree in the professions or sciences along with a major or minor in Catholic Studies
