Tutor-Mentor at St. Thomas

For more than 20 years, the University of St. Thomas has worked to coordinate the campus supply of top-notch education to meet the local demand for tutors and mentors. Apply today to participate in closing the achievement gap in the Twin Cities, build relationships with young members of our community, and learn more about this pressing social issue.


In addition to serving at least once per week in one of the locations listed below, Tutor-Mentors are required to attend 3-4 meetings (depending on the site):

  1. Tutor-Mentor orientation on-campus
  2. On-site training + Protecting God's Children (child abuse prevention training), depending on the site
  3. Mid-Semester group reflection (choose one of 3 dates, on-campus)
  4. End of semester gathering on-campus

Our Sites

Pilot One-on-One

An intervention program for at-risk students with academic challenges who typically do not have strong home support and/or are living in crisis. Tutors and students study and practice study skills.

Days/Times: Mon - Fri for 1-3 hours, 11 AM - 2 PM (choose 1+ periods).

Location: Murray Middle School, 2200 Buford Avenue, St. Paul 55108

Training: 90-minute on-site training/orientation, held at 8:00 am or 2:30 pm most days upon request.

Risen Christ Catholic Elementary School

Seeking volunteer tutors and mentors to assist K-8th graders in and outside the classroom weekly for ten weeks. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially encouraged to apply - 75% of Risen Christ students speak Spanish in the home.

Days/Times: Various

Location: Risen Christ Elementary, 1120 E 37th St, Minneapolis, MN 55407

Training: 30-min interview/orientation + Protecting God's Children VIRTUS Training (available on-campus Feb 21, 2017)

Project Pride in Living Scholars

Seeking Volunteer Tutor-Mentors to be matched 1:1 or in small groups to support social and academic growth through literacy tutoring, relationship-building, and enrichment. Children are K-5th grade.

Date/Time: Tues & Thurs for 2 hours, 5:00 – 8:00 PM (varies by site)

Location: Various (St. Paul/Mpls/Metro Area)

Prodeo Scholars

Tutors provide compassionate, individualized, and results-driven instruction to each of our scholars, reflecting an understanding of and commitment to their unique educational and personal needs. Students K-3rd grade.

Date/Time: Mon - Thurs, 8:35 AM - 10:35 AM

Location: Prodeo Academy, 1555 40th Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN, 55421

ACES: Athletes Committed to Educating Students

ACES Volunteer Classroom Leaders will improve the academic progress of urban student by helping in the facilitation of hands-on activities focused on reading, writing, math, and art. Relationship building is a fundamental part of the program- because of this, ACES stresses regular and consistent attendance at program over an extended period (one semester minimum, 2.5 - 5 hours per week).
