Abstract

From Bach to broccoli, symmetry abounds in art and nature. But symmetry also has a rich mathematical life!

From Bach to broccoli, symmetry abounds in art and nature. But symmetry also has a rich mathematical life! In this talk I'll introduce the mathematical notion of continuous symmetry and discuss how it can be used to reduce the complexity of mathematical problems. I'll also highlight some neat applications of symmetry, including a very impractical get-rich-quick scheme invented by Saint Thomas Students during a summer research project.
