Two internships available with Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations
Again next year, Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the permanent observer of the Holy See (the Vatican) to the United Nations, will offer two internships to St. Thomas students or recent UST alumni.
The interns act as staff to the members of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations and perform responsibilities such as monitoring the actions of U.N. bodies and representing the Holy See in various meetings.
One internship will run from Sept. 1, 2006, to the end of December, the period that the general assembly is in session. The other internship will run from Sept. 1 to the end of July, 2007. Each internship will include room and partial board at the mission, as well as a stipend of $800 per month. Students may apply regardless of academic major, subject to the qualifications listed below.
Here are the qualifications for all prospective interns:
- Be a senior, graduate student or recent graduate of St. Thomas
- Have a strong academic record
- Have a demonstrated knowledge of and interest in international politics, economics or law
- Be of good moral character and an informed and committed Catholic
Selection process
Applications must be completed by Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, for the internships beginning on Sept. 1. Applicants should submit a résumé, transcripts of undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate coursework, and a 500- to 1,000-word letter expressing interest in the position and highlighting their qualifications for it. Each applicant also should arrange for three letters of recommendation, including at least two from St. Thomas faculty members.

A committee of UST faculty and administrators will select the interns. Finalists should expect to be interviewed by the selection committee.
Lucas Swanepoel, a 2005 graduate of the UST School of Law, and Brian Cullen, who received his B.A. degree from St. Thomas in 2005, currently are serving as interns at the U.N. Mission.
