Sophomores invited to attend informational meeting concerning community service scholarship

Sophomores are invited to attend an informational meeting about the Phillips Scholarship for community service at noon on Thursday, Oct. 30, in Room 153, Murray-Herrick Campus Center (the Center for Intercultural Learning and Community Engagement).

Phillips Scholarships are awarded annually to six students from the Minnesota Private Colleges who intend to dedicate a portion of their lives to community service. Scholarship candidates propose ideas for a self-designed summer service project, and each campus may submit one student application for this competitive award of $15,250.

The University of St. Thomas has set a deadline of Monday, Dec. 1, for a two-page application and initial proposal of intended summer service projects. This application will be available at the Oct. 30 meeting or may be obtained through the CILCE office, Room 159, Murray-Herrick Campus Center.

Scholarship candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a current sophomore;
  • Have an excellent academic record (GPA of 2.75+);
  • Have demonstrated current financial need;
  • Aspire to serve disadvantaged people;
  • Have a history of participating in campus activities and an interest in community service and volunteering;
  • Be committed to designing and implementing a Minnesota-focused service project in the summer between junior and senior years.

Phillips Scholars receive a $5,250 junior-year scholarship; a $4,000 summer award to support the development and implementation of a self-designed service project to address unmet needs in Minnesota communities; $500 from the project resource pool; and a $5,000 senior year scholarship contingent on the successful completion of the summer project.

The Oct. 30 meeting will provide more information on the scholarship and examples of past projects and profiles of scholarship recipients. More information may also be found on the Minnesota Private Colleges Web site
