Professional Notes St. Thomas Newsroom December 11, 2001 Dr. Stephen Brookfield, School of Education, recently gave the Read Distinguished Lecture keynote address at the eighth annual Conference on Improving College Teaching sponsored by Kent State University. The conference theme was "Celebrating College Teaching." Brookfield’s address was titled "Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher."Dr. Jeri Rockett, Personal Counseling and Associate Dean of Student Life, received a letter of commendation for her work on the governing board of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors at its annual conference in Toronto. Rockett finished serving two consecutive terms on the board. At the conference she was appointed coordinator of continuing education, serving as a liaison between the governing board and the American Psychological Association to award continuing education credits to members. The typical tenure for this position is three to five years or, as Rockett says, "until you can’t stand it anymore."Dr. Debra Petersen, Communication Department and Luann Dummer Center for Women, was one of 14 winners presented 2001 Minneapolis Awards Nov. 15 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The awards, given by the city of Minneapolis, recognize people whose exceptional efforts have enriched the community. Petersen and Kristie Roedl were instrumental in raising $500,000 to build a new playground and park facilities totally accessible to handicapped children in Hiawatha Park. They also worked to educate parents, teachers, Park Board staff and neighborhoods about playground accessibility and safety.
