Professional Notes
Eight UST students presented their research at the 76th annual meeting of the Minnesota Academy of Science April 17 and 18 at the College of St. Catherine. Two won awards for the best presentations in the academy's Winchell Undergraduate Symposium: Maria Hindt won a Winchell Award in the cellular biology session for her talk,"Promoter characterization of rap1, a possible tumor suppressor gene." James Stokman took home the award in the biochemistry/chemistry session for his presentation, "Synthesis of an isothiazole antimicrobial." Hindt and Stockman collaborated on their research with Dr. Jennifer Cruise, College of Arts and Sciences (Biology Department), and Dr. Tom Ippoliti, College of Arts and Sciences (Chemistry Department), respectively.
Other student presenters and their advisers included: Matt Humbert, advised by Dr. Tony Borgerding , College of Arts and Sciences (Chemistry Department); Patrick Hawk, advised by Dr. Tom Marsh, College of Arts and Sciences (Chemistry Department); and Jonathan Meyer, advised by Dr. Adam Kay, College of Arts and Sciences (Biology Department) and Marsh. Poster session participants were: Jordan Crow, advised by Dr. Amy Verhoeven, College of Arts and Sciences (Biology Department), and Christine Spampinato and Nick Huynh, advised by Dr. Jill Manske, College of Arts and Sciences (Biology Department). The meeting will be held at St. Thomas next year.
Dr. John Abraham and Dr. AnnMarie Thomas, School of Engineering, are co-authors of the paper, "Induced Co-Flow and Laminar-to-Turbulent Transition with Synthetic Jets," published in the journal Computers and Fluids, Vol. 38, 2009.
Dr. Dave Brennan and Dr. Lorman Lundsten, Opus College of Business, are the co-authors of "An Assessment of Wal-Mart's Global Expansion Strategy in Light of Its Domestic Strategy," in the April issue of European Retail Research.
Dr. William J. Kinney , College of Arts and Sciences (Sociology and Criminal Justice Department), co-authored two papers presented at the annual meeting of the Southern Sociological Society last month in New Orleans. Dr. Jynette Larshus, a St. Thomas alumna and assistant professor at Georgia Southern University, was co-author with Kinney of "Cultural Fragmentation and Generation Y" and "Deviance Diminished?: Technological Influences on the Normalization of Deviant Cultures."
Dr. AnnMarie Thomas, School of Engineering, was named to the board of directors for Leonardo's Basement , a nonprofit organization that aims to provide imaginative learning environments where children and their family can explore art, engineering, science and technology.
