Dr. Jan Andrews-Schenk, School of Social Work, contributed the first chapter, "The Legacy of Ruby Pernell and Social Group Work," to the book, Growth and Development Through Group Work, edited by Claudia Carson, Anna Fritz, Elizabeth Lewis, John Ramey and David Sugiuchi (Haworth Press, 2004).
Dr. William Carter III, Alumni Association and School of Education, is quoted in a column, "Maintaining Positive Morale," in the July issue of Law Enforcement Technology. He directs the Master of Arts in Police Leadership program at St. Thomas.
Dr. Kenneth Goodpaster and T. Dean Maines, College of Business, were presenters at the Caux Round Table Annual Global Dialogue Oct. 21-24 near Tokyo. The Caux Round Table is a group of business leaders from Asia, Europe and North America dedicated to enhancing ethical values in business across cultural boundaries. Goodpaster also offered the more than 100 executives a summary of the highlights of their meeting and will compile a full narrative of the proceedings.
Joe Landsberger, Information Resources and Technologies, will serve as a member of the Nominating committee of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. AECT promotes scholarship and best practices in the creation, use and management of technologies for effective teaching and learning. The committee reviews credentials and selects candidates for its board and presidency. Landsberger also writes a column, "E-Learning by Design," for Tech Trends, AECT's peer-reviewed magazine. He also is an editor of the Open Directory Project.
Dr. Richard Raschio, Modern and Classical Languages Department, gave a presentation, titled "What Makes Service-Learning Work? Examples of Effective Service-Learning Projects," at a session on service-learning at the annual conference of the South Central Modern Language Association Oct. 29 in New Orleans.
Dr. Buffy Smith, Sociology and Criminal Justice Department, was invited to offer remarks to the 2004 class of Dissertation Fellows at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education Nov. 3-4 in Kansas City. Smith received the 2003 Dissertation Fellowship awarded by ASHE and the Lumina
Foundation.
Dr. Fred Zimmerman, Engineering and Technology Management Department, recently gave a talk, "Outsourcing: What Do We Do?" to the Issues of Globalization class taught by retired St. Thomas professor Al Trostel at the Edina Community Center. On Oct. 18, Zimmerman met with officials from the city of St. Paul, the state of Minnesota, the State Legislature and the Chamber of Commerce on what might be done to help selected manufacturers in the region. On Oct. 24, he met with the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce on similar subjects.
