Ryan began working at the Catholic Digest as a contributing editor in 1938, two years after the publication was founded. He served as assistant editor from 1947 to 1956 and editor from 1956 until 1975. After his retirement, he continued to write a regular column, “What Would You Like to Know About the Church?”

The University of St. Thomas acquired the Catholic Digest in 1964. It is the largest paid-circulation Catholic publication in the United States.
