Philosophy Colloquium to consider 'The Discovery of Ancient Tibetan Philosophy Texts'
Dr. Jonathan Stoltz, assistant professor, UST Philosophy Department, will speak on "Discovering Lost Philosophy: The Discovery of Ancient Tibetan Philosophy Texts" at the next lecture in the Philosophy Colloquium Series.
This event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the auditorium, Room 126, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts.
Stoltz will talk about the discovery, over the last 10 years, of a large collection of texts on Tibetan Buddhist philosophical thought, dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, packed away in a monastery in Tibet.
For nearly 600 years these texts had been considered lost, and historians were surprised to find that copies of the texts still existed. In his presentation, Stoltz will talk about the actual discovery of these texts as well as some of the items of philosophical interest that have come to light now that historians and philosophers have begun to look at the texts.
