New Classical Society will meet tomorrow
The first meeting of the newly established UST Classical Society (Societas Classica) will be held tomorrow, Thursday, May 3.
Come prepared to discuss the place of classical studies within the context of the university and a liberal arts curriculum. The group will spend the majority of the meeting, which will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 108, O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center, brainstorming and discussing goals for the upcoming year.
Participants will talk about how the Classical Society can be shaped to best serve the student body and to foster study of the Greek and Roman languages and cultures. In turn, this study can help students better understand their own cultural identity in the Western Hemisphere.
In the future, the Classical Society plans to organize: reading groups in both Latin and Greek, lectures on the classics and humanities, cultural events, dramatic presentations, and anything else that will encourage students to engage the classical traditions, especially in their relationship to the Christian tradition.
No prior knowledge of Latin or Greek is necessary in order to participate. The Classical Society will meet monthly during the school year and will host other events throughout upcoming semesters.
