Dr. David Engberg, Glendale, Wis., will become the director of international education at the University of St. Thomas on Aug. 24, it was announced by Dr. Susan Huber, executive vice president and chief academic officer.
Engberg comes to St. Thomas from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he was director of overseas programs and partnerships since 2007.

He previously served as director of training and special programs at Montana State University’s Office of International Programs and was a program associate at the Center for International Initiatives at the American Council on Education. He was a program associate at International Strategies and Training Inc., and was a research assistant at the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College and the International Affairs Office at the University of Nebraska.
He also served nine years as a linguist for the U.S. Army Reserves, taught English in Japan and was a tour guide in the Czech Republic.
Engberg holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Boston College; his master’s in anthropology and bachelor’s in German and geography are from the University of Nebraska.
In his role at St. Thomas he will direct the university’s International Education Center and its study-abroad, international student admissions, and faculty and student exchange programs.
St. Thomas’ International Education Center was founded in 1983 by Dr. Sarah Stevenson, who retired in 2010. Ann Hubbard has served as interim director over the past year.
“The International Education Center plays a vital role on campus in coordinating and promoting international activities,” said Huber. “I look forward to Dr. Engberg’s arrival and am very eager to have a permanent director of the center in position for the beginning of the school year.”
In its most recent Open Doors Report, the Institute of International Education ranked St. Thomas seventh nationally among doctoral institutions for undergraduate students who study abroad. St. Thomas also ranked fourth in Minnesota, and was the state’s top private institution, for international student enrollment.
