Can we still be feminists and faithful? Discussion Nov. 15
"Can We Still Be Feminists and Faithful?" is the title of an interfaith dialogue from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Luann Dummer Center for Women.
The brown-bag lunch discussion is co-sponsored by the women's center and Wisdom Ways Center for Spirituality, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
Discussion organizers recall an interreligious dialogue group, Feminists in Faith, that was initiated in 1984. Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Protestant women met monthly. The group encouraged openness to diverse faith traditions. Sister Catherine Litecky, C.S.J., professor emerita of theology at the College of St. Catherine, one of the original members of the group, explained, "The idea of this gathering originated with the late Marcia Yugend -- a dynamic, observant, Jewish woman -- who wanted to explore ways of promoting justice and equality for women through dialogue with women of faith in (various religious) traditions."
Organizers of this discussion think the time is right to resurrect such a group: "As women of faith, wives, mothers, ministers, friends and caretakers, we can refuse to submit to the forces that want us to view each other as rivals. We would like to have an initial brown-bag discussion to brainstorm on topics and logistics for the reformulation of this group. We invite both former and new members."
