On Paying Our Fair Share Powerpoint

Co-sponsored by the John A. Ryan Institute for Catholic Social Thought and Terrence J. Murphy Institute for Catholic Thought, Law, and Public Policy in anticipation of the 2022 conference "Freedom, Subsidiarity, and the Spirit of Gift".

The purpose of government is to establish and sustain the common good of the civil community. In order to do this, it requires revenue to support its operations and so members of the community have a duty to pay taxes. Moral theology and philosophy rarely go beyond this basic principle but other important questions remain. What operations are really necessary and appropriate for government to perform? How should the burdens of taxation be distributed? Is it wrong for individuals or corporations to take advantage of tax preferences to reduce to liability? What is a “fair share”? How and by whom is it determined? Professor Robert Kennedy, author of the book Justice in Taxation, will lead a discussion of these issues.
