Center for Writing

About the Center for Writing

The Center for Writing at the University of St. Thomas offers individualized conferences to students at any stage of the writing process. Our mission is to:

  • promote students' engagement in writing, reading, and critical analysis
  • support writers as they develop their abilities to respond to others, reflect, and express their own ideas concisely and thoughtfully
  • enable students to gain perspective, self-awareness, and confidence as learners and writers.

    As a student at St. Thomas, you will have the opportunity to receive ongoing writing support for any period of time. The Center for Writing supports:

    • Undergraduate students in their first year at UST
    • Undergraduate students writing in core courses
    • Undergraduate students working on writing assignments for "writing intensive" and "writing in the disciplines" courses in the WAC program
    • Students writing personal statements
    • Undergraduate and graduate students writing in their specific fields of study.

    Our peer consultants and writing mentors strive to help you:

    • become a better writer
    • communicate your ideas clearly
    • think critically
    • experience an audience as you write
    • make deeper connections between class discussions, your reading, and your own observations and experiences
    • see writing as crucial throughout your time at St. Thomas and beyond.

    ESL Students

    Peer consultants in the Center for Writing support you as you read and write in English in academic settings. During one-on-one consultations, we will work with you on:
    • understanding writing assignments
    • learning and practicing writing college-level academic English
    • reading scholarly texts
    • developing your writing process.

    Alumni

    Recent and past graduates of the University of St. Thomas are welcome to take advantage of the services provided by the Center for Writing in person or online.

    Alumni interested in having a graduate consultant or the director assist with preparing professional resumes or vitae, or personal statements for application to graduate programs should contact the director through the Center for Writing email writing@stthomas.edu or through her own email sjcallaway@stthomas.edu.

    Our Hours and How to Make an Appointment

    While walk-ins are welcome, although appointments are recommended. Register with our online appointment system and choose In-Person, Zoom or Written Feedback. Students can also email us with any quick questions, for example about documentation.

    Fall and Spring Semester Hours

    Monday – Thursday: 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
    Friday: 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
    Sunday: 6-9 p.m.
