Social Justice Summit - “The New Normal”

On Sunday, November 5, Student Diversity & Inclusion Services and Campus Life will host the Social Justice Summit: “The New Normal” at 1 p.m. in ASC Woulfe North. This summit is intended to increase the capacity of participants to enact social change through building skills in advocacy, community engagement, and knowledge through a social justice lens, creating a more interculturally aware and interculturally intelligent community. “The New Normal” acknowledges the theme in today’s society of the frequent—almost constant—occurrences of injustice in the news, especially within the post-election climate. All of this can be rather over-stimulating and may cause us to want to tune out or give up, so how does one make change or create output within this environment? Bryant Smith, “The Human Potential Specialist”, will join us to facilitate the retreat as we explore these and other important questions.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Deepen understanding of the dynamics of oppression and historically marginalized groups, cultures and systems.
  • Reflect and develop problem solving and critical thinking skills within a social justice framework.
  • Increase intercultural intelligence and develop confidence and ability to have deeper conversations about diversity.

Bryant Smith incorporates lessons he learned growing up in the most racially segregated cities in the nation and moving to the “New South” into much of his professional work. His personal motto, “Difficult does not equal impossible” serves as a constant reminder that hard work will always overcome hard times. Mr. Smith has over 25 years of experience in educating, training, and supporting businesses and institutions on supporting diverse students, faculties, managers, and staff. He is the creator of the award winning diversity experiential learning experience “The Box”, and “Life Station” personal development seminars which has helped both young men and women tap into their unlimited potential.
