Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

April 1, 2020

DN 3:14-20, 91-92, 95/JN 8:31-42

One hundred years ago today, my mother was born. When she was alive, she insisted that we celebrate our family’s birthdays, anniversaries and holidays on the actual day. There was no gathering on the weekend if your birthday fell on a Wednesday. We got together on Wednesday. So, today, I remember my mother, the one who shared with us many celebrations, but most importantly the gift of faith.

We read today how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego sacrifice their own lives to be true to God. King Nebuchadnezzar orders the three men to be thrown into a white-hot furnace because they would not serve his god or worship his golden statue. Funny thing is, when the three were tossed in the fire to be burned alive, four figures could be seen walking out of the fire. God sent an angel to lead them out of the fire.

God leads us through our days. He walks with us even when we are having the deepest trials of our lives. We are living in very trying times today. People are sick, scared, alone and dying. Remember to celebrate even the small things today-the blue sky or the sighting of green grass. God tells us to put our whole trust in Him. He will save us from the fire we are living through right now. Keep praying. Keep trusting in God.

Happy Day!
