Fourth Sunday of Advent

December 18, 2016 / By: Jacob Cunningham

I would guess that, as you read this today, you have a fairly substantial list of things to do before Christmas.  I would also guess that there is some amount of stress associated with this list.  I’m here to tell you that you’re in good company.  Remember Joseph hadn’t even bothered to book a hotel before he arrived in Jerusalem with his pregnant wife!  Who does that?

Yet in the end it all worked out.  I think the point of that story and so many biblical stories is that it’s not solely up to us to make sure things work out.  We don’t get to know how it all works out all the time.  The Spirit moves, nudging us towards love, kindness and peace.  The Spirit moves, urging our hearts to be open.  The Spirit moves.

So: Beyond our lists and plans; beyond all the details of hosting family; beyond annoying uncles and box wine; beyond kids who could probably be more grateful; beyond cramped shopping malls and long checkout lines is the whisper of God saying:

Be still and know that I AM God.

My prayer is that we listen to this whisper amidst the noise and that it fills us with love for whomever we happen to be around at that moment.  Enjoy this final week of Advent and have a Blessed Christmas.
