Opportunities for clinical practice specialization
Clinical social workers are found in myriad settings and are skilled at working with diverse populations. St. Kate's-St. Thomas MSW students have the opportunity to focus in a particular area of clinical social work practice through their choice of elective courses, their field practicum, focus of course assignments, and (as an optional elective) a clinical research project.
In addition to popular areas of specialization such as mental health, working with children & families, and working in an integrated healthcare setting (to name a few), our MSW students may apply to become an Area of Emphasis Scholar in one of three critical, emerging clinical practice areas: Gero-social Work Practice, Military Social Work, and Practice with Immigrants & Refugees.
In 2015, the School of Social Work was one of just ten schools to receive the Social Work Health Care Education and Leadership Scholars (HEALS) grant from the Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). The ten selected schools will serve as the hub for scholarships to educate and train social workers to strengthen the delivery of health care services in the U.S.
