2017-18 Social Work HEALS scholars: Karolyn Britton, Sherronda Bowden, Stephanie Lien & Alison Waid Higgins

Congratulations to our four Healthcare Education and Leadership Scholars (HEALS) grant recipients for 2017-18! The initiative has entered year three of the five-year grant which is co-sponsored by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). The goal of the grant is to “develop the next generation of health care social work leaders.”

Each year the grant supports two BSW students and two MSW students who receive robust healthcare education and training, opportunities to engage in a variety of leadership and interprofessional programs, a tuition stipend, and funding to attend the Social Work HEALS policy summit in Washington, D.C., in the spring. A unique aspect of the St. Kate’s – St. Thomas program is the involvement of student scholar/field instructor pairs on our Social Work HEALS Leadership Council.

The 2017-18 grant recipients and their participating field supervisors are as follows:

  • Sherronda Bowden, BSW, with Theresa McPartlin of the UST Interprofessional Center for Counseling & Legal Services
  • Karolyn Britton, BSW, with John Spieker of Catholic Charities – Higher Ground St. Paul
  • Stephanie Lien, MSW, with Nicole Helland of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of MN
  • Alison Waid Higgins, MSW, with Kayla Carlson of North Memorial Medical Center

This year, the grant has provided additional funding to encourage participating schools to host a healthcare policy event. SAVE THE DATE for August 7, 2018, when Social Work HEALS will present the Seventh Annual Summit on Emerging Issues in Social Work Practice in conjunction with the Field Practice Institute.  Details to come!
