SOCIAL WORK:  One degree, endless opportunities for impact.

BSW faculty representatives will be available to discuss the social work profession, the social work major, social work field education, double majors, and our two minors, Social Services Management and Chemical Dependency Counseling: Addiction & Recovery.

In addition, we will have information about the St. Thomas Master of Social Work (MSW), which is open to graduates from any major and prepares clinical social workers, the largest group of professionally trained mental health providers in the U.S., supplying more than half of counseling and therapy services (NASW). St. Thomas graduates from ANY major qualify for alumni grants representing a 10% tuition discount!

• Social justice advocacy • Child, family & school social work
• Group counseling • International social work
• Community education & organizing • Practice with immigrants & refugees
• Restorative justice & corrections • Military social work
• Policy and planning • Gero-social work with older adults
• Case management • Addiction and recovery
• Crisis intervention • Healthcare and medical social work
• Social services administration • Community mental health
  • Social Work is a licensed profession. Social work employment is expected to grow by almost 20% this decade!

  • BSW students gain real-world experience during 600 hours of field education/internships (juniors complete a 200-hour placement and seniors complete a 400-hour placement), learning and practicing the knowledge, values, and skills of a social worker in a wide range of community-based settings and supervised by trained, agency-based social workers.

  • Graduates with a BSW can enter most master's degree in social work (MSW) programs as an "Advanced Standing" student and complete it in as little as one year.  For junior social work majors interested in pursuing an MSW in clinical social work practice after completing their BSW, the School of Social Work has introduced an Accelerated MSW Admissions process.
    • Graduates from ANY major will receive a St. Thomas alumni grant to the MSW program, representing a tuition discount of 10%
