Coffee with Class: April 6-Inside the Vatican of Pope Francis: A Journalist's Perspective
Coffee with Class features a talk and breakfast-style refreshments in a tabled setting.
Event Description: At the five-year mark, Pope Francis has broken the mold of the papacy, shaken up the Vatican establishment, and tried to set the Catholic Church on a fresh missionary course. John Thavis, who has covered the Vatican for more than 30 years, takes an insider's look at how successful the Argentine pope has been, what kind of opposition he faces, and how enduring his reforms will prove to be.
Event Information: Friday, April 6, 2018, 9:30-11:00 a.m., McNeely Hall Room 100, University of St. Thomas St. Paul Campus (refreshments will be available starting at 9:00 a.m.)
Event Speaker: John Thavis is a journalist, author and speaker specializing in Vatican and religious affairs. Thavis grew up in Minnesota and graduated from St. John's University in 1973. In 1982 he and his wife, Lauren O'Connell of Collegeville, moved to Italy. As reporter and Rome bureau chief for Catholic News Service, he covered the Vatican beat for 30 years, traveling with Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI to more than 60 countries. He served three years as president of the Association of International Journalists Accredited to the Vatican - the only American ever elected to that position. He has won numerous awards and has lectured on Vatican affairs in the United States and Europe. Thavis' book, The Vatican Diaries, was published in 2013 by Viking-Penguin and immediately became a New York Times bestseller. His second book, The Vatican Prophecies: Investigating Supernatural Signs, Apparitions, and Miracles in the Modern Age, has been lauded as "a compulsory read for any Catholics who may think they understand the mysterious side of their faith." He divides his time between Rome and St. Paul.
