International Relations of Asia: China, India, and Japan

Lecture Series Description: Asia ranks first in terms of population, landmass, and economic size. Asian countries have global ambitions and seek global influence, leading to strategic competition among them. As a result, international relations in Asia are evolving rapidly. This program will explore the foreign relations of three major Asian countries: China, India, and Japan. The role of these countries in Asia, their relations with each other, and their relations with the rest of the world, particularly the United States, will be examined.

Lecture Series Educator: Dr. Arijit Mazumdar is Professor of Political Science at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. He joined the Political Science department in September 2008. He teaches courses in Asian politics, Comparative foreign policy, and Developing world politics. His research interests include Contemporary India, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, and South Asia and East Asia (India, Pakistan, China, and Japan). He is the author of Indian Foreign Policy in Transition: Relations with South Asia (Routledge/Taylor & Francis Press). His work has been published in several academic journals, including Asian Affairs, Asian Affairs: An American Review, Asian Survey, Contemporary Politics, Indian Journal of Political Science, Journal of Asian and African Studies, and The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs.

June 7

This session explores China's role in Asia, its relations with other Asian countries, and its relations with the rest of the world, particularly the United States. It looks at the historical and contemporary factors shaping the country's foreign relations.

June 14

This session explores India's role in Asia, its relations with other Asian countries, and its relations with the rest of the world, particularly the United States. It looks at the historical and contemporary factors shaping the country's foreign relations.

June 21

This session explores Japan's role in Asai, its relations with other Asian countries, and its relations with the rest of the world, particularly the United States. It looks at the historical and contemporary factors shaping the country's foreign relations.

June 28

This session discusses how Asia is emerging as an arena of 'Balance of Power' politics. It will highlight potential "flashpoints" in Asia and look at the emergence of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (The Quad), in light of China's rise and growing doubts regarding US commitment to Asian security.
