The department operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day, on both the St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses.
The primary focus of the department is the care and safety of the students, employees, and guests of the University. Some of the services that are provided to the community are immediate response to medical emergencies, responding to crimes in progress or suspicious persons, providing escorts, assisting with vehicle lockouts, doing jump-starts, and conducting safety inspections. The department is also responsible for the campus-wide emergency notification system.
The Public Safety officers are well trained professionals in first aid, crisis management, emergency response, investigation, general safety, crime prevention and application of policies and laws.
Surveillance cameras are installed in the parking ramps and in many of the surface lots, but we still need your eyes. If you see something suspicious, contact Public Safety at 651-962-5555 in an emergency, 651-962-5100 for non-emergencies, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Officers make frequent patrols of all the parking lots and the parking ramp. If you see a vehicle parked illegally, you may contact the Public Safety Department at 651-962-5100 to request enforcement. Make a note of the vehicle make and license plate if possible.
Snow and ice are removed from the parking lots as needed, generally in the early morning hours. Occasionally, it may be necessary to close a lot in order to remove snow. Lot closings are subject to ticketing and towing at the vehicle owner's expense. Your patience during these times is appreciated. You can contact the Public Safety and Parking Services Department or Facilities Management if you have questions.
Battery Jump-Start Service
Public Safety and Parking Services has a jump-start service for vehicles parked on or within a six-block radius of the St. Paul campus or within one block of the Minneapolis campus. This service is available on a "first-come, first-served" basis as time or weather permits. Anyone parked on the St. Paul or Minneapolis campus who does not have three or more outstanding parking citations can get a free jump-start, however, they must complete a waiver releasing the university from liability. Public Safety officers may elect, but are not required, to provide such a service, particularly if their other patrol and/or emergency-care duties are put at risk. If you have three or more outstanding citations, these must be paid before the service will be attempted.
If St. Thomas Public Safety officers are unable to assist you or if their attempts fail, a local service station will be called for you, but you will need to pay the private vendor for the cost of the service provided. Call the St. Thomas Public Safety and Parking Services at 651-962-5100.
Vehicle Lock Outs
If you lock your keys in your vehicle on campus or within a six-block radius of the St. Paul campus or within one block of the Minneapolis campus, you may contact Public Safety and Parking Services and an attempt will be made to open your vehicle. A waiver needs to be signed releasing the University from liability. Proof of ownership and proper identification will be required. If you have three or more outstanding citations, these must be paid before the service will be attempted. Public Safety officers may elect, but are not required, to provide such a service, particularly if their other patrol and/or emergency-care duties are put at risk.
The St. Thomas escort service is designed to assist people to their cars, class or anywhere within a six block radius of the St. Paul campus or within one block of the Minneapolis campus. Public Safety provides escorts to anyone who is unable or to anyone who, for safety reasons, does not want to walk to their destination. To request an escort, call Public Safety at 651-962-5100.
