Me and God

Descartes begins the fourth Meditation with the following remark: "In the last few days...I have been careful to observe how little truth there is in our perceptions of corporeal objects; how much more is known about the human mind, and how much more again about God.' Again, a bit further on: 'And when I observe that I am doubting, or am an incomplete and dependent being, there comes to me a clear and distinct idea of an independent and complete being, namely God; and from the mere fact that such an idea occurs in me, or that I who have it exist, the conclusion is manifest to me that God exists likewise, and that my whole existence depends on him from moment to moment; so much so, that I am confident that the human mind can know nothing more certainly or more evidently.' ---The idea appears to be that I know God better than I know even myself: that is, that I know more about him, and know it more certainly, and more evidently, than I do about me. My object in this talk is to try to enter into this remarkable idea and see if I can't somehow feel the force of it.
