Sara E. Gross Methner

General Counsel

Sara Gross Methner is general counsel and secretary of the University of St. Thomas. She joined St. Thomas in 2011 as its first general counsel and also served as chief human resources officer from 2011 through mid-2014.

Before joining St. Thomas, Sara was a managing director in the Hong Kong and Minneapolis offices of Piper Jaffray Companies, an investment bank and asset management firm. She served in a number of roles at Piper Jaffray, including assistant general counsel and head of compensation, general counsel and chief administrative officer for the firm's Asia division, and international general counsel. Sara previously was an associate attorney with the law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP, where her areas of practice included corporate governance, securities, equity and executive compensation, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate matters. She began her career as a legislative assistant to a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., where she focused on health care, energy, and international trade matters.

Sara graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Wellesley College with a bachelor’s degree in Chinese language and literature. She received her law degree with distinction from Stanford Law School. Twice named a Rising Star by Minnesota Law and Politics, Sara is a regular speaker to lawyer and non-lawyer audiences on topics in her areas of expertise and experience. She is actively involved in the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and is a former member of its board of directors. She currently serves on the NCAA General Counsel Advisory Board and as a member of the boards and executive committees of the YWCA St. Paul and DeLaSalle High School. She also serves as a liturgical minister at her church.
