Dr. Heino Beckmann, Master of International Management Program, gave a presentation, "Greek Opportunities and Challenges in the European Marketplace," Jan. 10 at New York College in Athens, Greece. On Jan. 11, he gave a presentation, "The Euro Against the Dollar: Managing in the Euro Environment," to the Hellenic Marketing Association.

Dr. Jed Herman, Dr. Lisa Johnson, Dr. Jeff McLean and Dr. Patrick Van Fleet, Mathematics Department, attended the Joint Mathematics Meeting in New Orleans last month. McLean presented a paper, "A Capstone Course for Mathematics Education Majors," at the American Mathematical Society session on information and mathematics education. He discussed the relatively new St. Thomas Course, MATH 450: Advanced Mathematics, Exploration and Exposition.

Eleni Hoffhines, International Admissions, and Krista McCallum Beatty, Office of International Student Services, gave a presentation, "International Student Admissions and Financial Requirements," Jan. 18 at the winter meeting of the Minnesota Association of Financial Aid Administrators.

Dr. J. Thomas Ippoliti, Chemistry Department, was invited to give a lecture, "Synthesis of Naphthopyran-Based Photochromes," Jan. 18 at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa. The talk summarized research carried out by undergraduates last summer.

The Rev. Jan Michael Joncas, Theology Department and Center for Catholic Studies, offered a workshop on Eucharistic spirituality and celebration for the Piedmont Deanery of the Raleigh, N.C., diocese, Jan. 27 in Chapel Hill.

Dr. William Kinney, Sociology Department, is the author of a chapter, "Teaching Sociology in the Catholic University: Conflict, Compromise and the Role of Academic Freedom," in Enhancing Religious Identity: Best Practices From Catholic Campuses, published last year by Georgetown University Press.

Susan Price, O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center, is the author of one of 45 books nominated for the 13th annual Minnesota Book Awards. Her latest book, Growing Home: Stories of Ethnic Gardening, was published last year.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Warren, English Department, gave a talk, "Women in the Genealogy of Jesus," Jan. 7 at Luther Memorial Church in South St. Paul.

Dr. Fred Zimmerman, Manufacturing Systems and Engineering Department, was interviewed by Minnesota Public Radio Feb. 2 regarding rumored layoffs in the wake of GE's acquisition of Honeywell Inc. On Jan. 10 he was on National Public Radio regarding corporate mergers. Zimmerman thinks most mergers are ill-conceived and poorly implemented.
