Dr. Phil Anderson, Management Department, presented a paper co-authored with Dr. Leigh Lawton, Marketing Department, at the annual meeting of the Association for business Simulation and Experiential Learning March 21 in Baltimore. The paper was titled "The Optimal Timing for Introducing Business Simulations."
Dr. Janice Andrews-Schenk, School of Social Work, presented a paper, "Group Work as Progressive Practice," on March 24 at the University of Applied Social Sciences in Hamburg, Germany. While in Germany, she did research for a book she is finishing on the life and legacy of Gisela Konopka. Andrews-Schenk's most recent publication, a book review of Women and the Politics of Class, appears in the Journal of Progressive Human Services, Vol. 13, No. 2.
Dr. Sarah Armstrong, Dr. Colette Kuhn, Dr. Steve Maurer and Dr. Jeri Rockett, Personal Counseling, gave a presentation at the program, "Keep the Faith: Counseling and Spirituality," at the annual meeting of the American College Personel Association April 1 in Minneapolis.
Dr. James Callahan, Music Department, is composer of "Prelude to the Introit for Easter Sunday," which will be premiered at the 10 a.m. Easter Sunday Mass in the Cathedral of St. Paul. The work was written specifically for this occasion and will be performed by cathedral organist James Biery.
Dr. John Conbere, Organization Learning and Development Department, is the principal investigator for an evaluation of the dispute-resolution system of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. St. Thomas has been awarded a $23,000 USDA grant to begin the evaluation. The contract is for the first phase of data collection from all workplace mediation sessions held in the USDA, which has 100,000 employees. Further contracts are expected. The work will involve collecting all information about the participant satisfaction with mediation and a unique cost-benefit study of workplace mediation. The cost-benefit study is being done in collaboration with Dr. Jim Brown of the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Daniel Fairchild, economics Department, is the author of an article, "Economic Efficiency, Growth, and the Catholic Vision of Economic Justice," in the winter 2003 edition of Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture.
Dr. Janet Grochowski, Health and Human Performance Department, presented a paper, "Active Learning with 'LearningQuests': An Interactive, Inquiry-Based Strategy," at the meetings of the American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance this month in Philadelphia.
Dr. J. Thomas Ippoliti, Chemistry Department, gave two talks at the 225th national meeting of the American chemical Society March 24 in New Orleans: "Synthesis of Dioxin-Based Photochromic Molecules" and "Small College Research Labs: A Little-Known Resource for Small Chemical Businesses."
Dr. Mitchell Kusy, Organization Learning and Development Department, was the featured speaker at the Medical Group Management Association's medical series April 10 in Springfield, Mo. The presentation, to physician executives and other health care executives, was on governance and organizational assessment. Kusy spoke about the hallmarks of successful governing boards, best ways to assess board success and board involvement in strategic planning.
Dr. John Wendt, Legal Studies in Business Department, presented a paper, "the New World Anti-Doping Agency and the World Anti-Doping Code," at the International Conference on the Olympic Games, "The Olympic Dream: Past, Present and Future of the Olympic Games," held March 21-23 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Wendt also has been renamed to the Counselors Committee of USA Swimming Inc. USA Swimming is the national governing body for the sport and administers competitive swimming in the United States in accordance with the Amateur Sports Act. It is affiliated with La Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), the international governing body of swimming, diving diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming.
