Oct. 1 Deadline Approaches for January Term and Spring Semester Study Abroad Applications

The Office of Study Abroad reminds undergraduate students that Tuesday, Oct. 1, is the 2014 spring semester and January Term study abroad application deadline.

A wide range of opportunities are available through the Office of Study Abroad. Students interested in semester- or yearlong study abroad can select from over 130 programs in more than 40 countries with options for every major. With the addition of new co-sponsored program offerings, almost 50 courses are now available to students during January Term. This is the second year the Office of Study Abroad has offered co-sponsored programs during J-Term; enrollment in these programs is already up 200 percent from last year.

Students interested in a semester- or yearlong study abroad program should attend a First Step Session to begin the advising process. Students applying for J-Term study abroad should apply online through the Study Abroad website. Many programs are still accepting applications and most fulfill major, minor or core requirements. The following are examples of programs with space still available:

Scholarships for semester and J-Term programs are available for qualified students. Melissa Seymour, a study abroad returnee, received a full scholarship last year to attend Queens University Belfast for a semester. “I was so lucky to receive a scholarship through the Irish American Scholars Program. Studying abroad in Northern Ireland truly changed my life,” Seymour commented. “If I could, I’d go back in a second!”

The study abroad scholarship deadline also is Oct. 1.

In 2013, 461 students studied abroad during J-Term, and 135 students studied abroad during spring semester. Be a part of the St. Thomas tradition – you have to go to know!
