The Office of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (OSLCE, pronounced o-slice) is teaming up with community partners, Sarah’s . . . an Oasis for Women and People Serving People, in support of a clothing and toy holiday drive. OSLCE is asking students, staff, faculty and friends for items including unwrapped toys, warm women’s and children’s clothing, glass food containers for leftovers and lunch holders, as well as wool and everyday socks.
The OSLCE team will sponsor a table in Campus Way in Anderson Student Center from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, 12 and 17, to collect donations. Donations also can be dropped off items in the specially marked boxes at OSLCE’s new office location in Aquinas Hall, Room 313, through Dec. 20. While you are there, stop in and say hello to program managers, Alex Hamel and Erin McCloskey, to learn about OSLCE’s initiatives.
Over the summer, OSLCE has made more than 30 new community partnerships and is continuing to expand. The St. Thomas community is invited to visit OSCLE to learn more about current projects and how the office is engaging with the community. Students can find opportunities to get involved in the community and receive information about scholarship and internship prospects, which encompass service and engagement components. Faculty members are encouraged to learn about how to incorporate service-learning into their courses.
To facilitate its efforts, OSLCE recently hosted a faculty workshop that focused on connecting local and global service-learning. For interested faculty, OSLCE will host the final workshop of the semester at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in Anderson Student Center, Room 234. The topic will be Positioning Your Community-Engaged Work for Promotion and Tenure. All faculty members who attend this workshop and who implement service-learning material into their courses or publish an article are eligible for an honorarium the first time they conduct a service-learning course.
