Teaching Music in a Progressive Setting: A Synthesis of Progressive Education and the Orff Approach

September 12, 2017 / By: Olivia Moraczewski

This paper aims to explain educational reformer John Dewey's philosophy of progressive education and how it is implemented at Prairie Creek Community School, as well as music composer and educator Carl Orff's approach to teaching music and how it fits well with Prairie Creek's progressive educational philosophy. The four parts of the paper outline the two educational philosophies, explain how they are implemented at Prairie Creek, draw connections between the two, and provide lists of musical concepts and sample lesson plans. The concluding section aims to highlight the similarities between the educational philosophies of Dewey and Orff and how they can fit so well together in the music classroom at Prairie Creek Community School.
