Scholarship for Professional Advancement
As an actuarial science major, you’ll have a variety of scholarship opportunities, supported by the local insurance industry. Moreover, we reimburse exam fees when you pass an actuarial exam.
St. Thomas supports research, too. During the summer months, you can conduct research with faculty – and occasionally practicing actuaries – on practical insurance problems. The research is funded by stipends through the Center for Applied Mathematics, and free summer housing is also available on campus. Some students present their work at the annual Actuarial Research conference.
Internships open the door to careers in actuarial practice and other financial areas. Most majors acquire at least one professional summer internship prior to their graduation.
An exchange program between St. Thomas and Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland -- known for its strong actuarial and statistics programs -- offers you the opportunity to study abroad. You may take one or two major required courses in Scotland. In addition, you may take advantage of study abroad opportunities through the International Education Center, and we occasionally offer our introductory course, Risk Management and Insurance, in London, during January term.
From Classroom to the World
As a student in our program, you benefit from a very active Math and Actuarial Science Club and a dedicated chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, the academic fraternity for risk management, insurance, and actuarial science. You also enjoy strong industry support through our external advisory committee and a large network of alumni in major insurance and actuarial consulting firms across the Twin Cities. There are opportunities to attend a variety of informational, networking, and social events organized by the University of St. Thomas and key players in the vibrant Twin Cities actuarial community.
