Information Literacy Program
Librarians support the curriculum by assisting students with their research and providing them with information literacy skills for lifelong learning. At St. Thomas, students will experience multiple opportunities to develop research skills and expertise in evaluating, comparing, and selecting reliable and credible sources of information. Ideally, librarians collaborate with faculty to engage students with assignments that foster critical thinking and prepare students to use information wisely and effectively in their academic, professional, and personal lives.
The Libraries use the University’s Core Curriculum’s summative goals to guide us in creating our information literacy curriculum. In addition, each liaison librarian works with their department(s) to ensure that departmental learning outcomes are met. The Libraries also follow the University’s Level-of-Learning curriculum development model by using a tiered approach to library instruction.
The process of achieving Information literacy is developmental and incremental. To be most effective, it should be integrated and assessed throughout the core curriculum as well as the disciplines.
