Please join us for our November book club discussion on Wednesday, November, 26 in the LDCW from 12 -1:00 p.m.
Todd Lawrence of English has graciously agreed to co-lead the discussion, and I'm looking forward to his brilliant and fun guidance into Butler's novel.
Parable of the Sower is set in a future where government has all but collapsed and civil society has reverted to relative anarchy due to resource scarcity and poverty. Lauren Olamina, a young woman who possesses what Butler dubbed hyperempathy – the ability to feel the perceived pain and sensations of others – develops a benign philosophical and religious system during her childhood in a gated community in Los Angeles. When her home is destroyed and her family murdered, Lauren travels north with some survivors to start a community where her religion, Earthseed, can grow.
News from the UST OSF Library! The book club titles for this year’s book club have been purchased and loaded on the UST libraries’ Kindles. The Kindles are available for checkout from the OSF Library on the main campus for UST students, faculty and staff for a period of 3 weeks. You can find additional information regarding the Kindles and a comprehensive title list here<http://www.stthomas.edu/libraries/books/kindles/> or on the library’s website.
The library also either already owns or has ordered the print editions for each title in this years’ book club as to help provide additional access for book club members. We also have two copies in the center we are able to lend out.
Thank you and don’t forget to check out this year’s dates for discussion and finalized book club list here: http://www.stthomas.edu/ldcw/programs/bookdiscussions/
