An LL.M. Degree for Internationally-Trained Lawyers

The University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, offers an innovative educational experience for foreign-educated attorneys that sets the standard for practical legal training while maintaining high ideals. We do not just train students for the real world; we train them to build a better world.

Our one-year, full-time LL.M. in U.S. Law program runs one academic year, mid-August to mid-May. Generous scholarships are available for outstanding applicants.

Program Overview

LL.M. in U.S. Law Degree

St. Thomas Law’s one-year LL.M. in U.S. Law program can be tailored to your professional goals and will prepare you to practice law in a global context by providing you with an insider’s view of the American legal system. Past students have come from Mexico, Guatemala, China, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Spain, India, Ethiopia, Chile, Colombia, Brazil and beyond.

Our Curriculum

A Personalized Degree

The LL.M. in U.S. Law program provides opportunities to focus on an area of law that interests you, such as global and comparative law, intellectual property or business and corporate law. We have a wide selection of elective courses to choose from and one of our distinguished faculty members will work with you to support your professional and personal development. Our program is especially beneficial if you expect to work with U.S.-trained attorneys on international transactions or disputes that involve U.S. law and legal institutions.

Experiential Learning

LL.M. Mentor Externship

Through St. Thomas Law's award-winning Mentor Externship Program, you will be paired with a local, practicing lawyer or judge who will serve as your mentor. You and your mentor will engage in experiential learning and debrief discussions that will provide you with an understanding of the legal and ethical standards, customs and practices of the U.S. legal profession.

Career and Professional Development

Our Office of Career and Professional Development (CPD), in partnership with other departments and faculty throughout the School of Law, works to ensure students have the professional tools they need for a successful career. CPD understands the complexities of the legal employment market for international students and offers individual career counseling and a variety of services for LL.M. in U.S. Law students.

St. Thomas Law offers a number of ways to get involved and be part of our school community. You can join one of our 35+ student clubs and organizations or attend one of the many events held at the law school, some just for LL.M. in U.S. Law students.
