How to Print

There are a variety of ways in which students are able to print from both on and off campus.

Students on campus have the ability to print:

Note: If you are on an on-campus computer, you can simply print to the nearest printer and it will charge to your account directly without any additional steps. 

1. Install the PaperCut Software

Personal computers require this step to download and install the PaperCut software before you are able to print.

PC Install

In order to print from your personal computer, you will need to download and install the PaperCut software.

Below you will find instructions that will assist in this process. 

  1. Download “PaperCut-PC
  2. Right click the .zip file and select “Extract All”
  3. Open the extracted folder, “PaperCut-PC”
  4. Open the folder "Win"
  5. Double-click the file “client-local-install.exe”
  6. Follow the install wizard to install PaperCut
  7. Restart your computer

Mac (10.7+) Install

In order to print from your personal computer, you will need to download and install the PaperCut software.

Below you will find instructions that will assist in this process. 

  1. Login with an account that has administrative access
  2. Download “PaperCut-Mac‌
  3. Double-click the .zip file to extract the "PaperCut-Mac.pkg" file.
  4. Double-click the PaperCut-Mac.pkg file and follow the prompts.
  5. PaperCut will launch automatically when you login to your Mac. You may also launch it by opening the "PCClient" app in Applications.

Mac(Prior to 10.7)

PaperCut software from is not available for Mac computers with operating systems prior to 10.7 (Lion).

In order to print, users will need to use the WebPrint system or use an on-campus computer. Instructions on how to use WebPrint are available below.

  1. Make sure that your Chromebook is connected to the internet. Your device should be connected to the UST network, not UST-open. (You can find the settings for this in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.)
  2. Once connected, Click on the Application menu in the bottom left-hand corner.
  3. Go to All Apps.
  4. Click on Web Store.
  5. Search for PaperCut and select the “Apps” filter under the search bar. This will bring up the Mobility Print app that is part of the PaperCut software used to track printing.
  6. Click “+ Add to Chrome” to the right of the application title.
  7. On the resulting pop-up, click “Add app”. This will install the application. You are set to print! *See instructions below

2. Add or Remove a Printer to your Computer

St. Thomas offers students the ability to wirelessly connect their computers to printers across campus.

Before getting started, you must be connected to the University internet via either a wired or wireless connection. Printing done from a personal computer still charges the standard printing rates against the user's semesterly print quota.

  1. Connect to any of the Wi-Fi networks
  2. Verify PaperCut is running
  3. Go to your Start Menu
  4. Select "Run" 
  5. In the "Open:" field type in the following:
    St. Paul printers use:  \\ust-pm2p\
    Minneapolis printers use: \\ust-pm3p\
    For FollowMe printing use: \\ust-pm2p\FollowMeBlack
    For FollowMe color prints: \\ust-pm2p\FollowMeColor
  6. If a dialogue window appears asking you to login, make sure to login including UST\ before your username (eg. UST\user1234) and your associated password
  7. A new window with the list of available public printers will appear organized by Building and Room location
  8. Double click on the printer in the list that you wish to map
  9. You will see a progress bar and it may take a few minutes to complete
  10. You will get a message that you have successfully added the printer, click Finish
  11. The next window asks if this printer should be the default printer, and if you wish to print a test page. Answer and click Finish
  12. If you go back to the Devices and Printers window from under the Start Menu, you will see the new printer shown

Remove a Printer

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Click on “Devices and Printers”
  3. Select the icon of the printer you wish to delete
  4. Under File,  choose “Remove Device”
  5. Restart your computer

To Change your Default Printer

  1. Click on the start button
  2. Click on “Devices and Printers”
  3. Select the icon of the printer you wish to make the default
  4. Under File, choose “Set as default printer”.
  1. Connect to any of our Wi-Fi networks
  2. Click on the apple icon in the upper left hand corner
  3. Choose System Preferences
  4. Click on Print & Scan
  5. Click the + button to add a printer
    On the new window that appears click on the Advanced tab
    If the Advanced tab is not listed in your toolbar, follow the instructions below:
    1. While holding down the Control key, click in any blank area of the icon toolbar
    2. Choose "Customize Toolbar"
    3. Drag the "Advanced" (gear icon) up to the toolbar
    4. Click Done
    5. Click on the Advanced tab that was just added to the toolbar.
  6. Under "Type" change this to: either Windows or Windows printer via spoolss
    1. Look up a St. Paul campus printer
    2. Look up a Minneapolis campus printer
    3. FollowMe Black & White:
    4. FollowMe Color:
  7. In the Name field, label it by the printer number
  8. In the location field, type the building and room number
  9. Click on the dropdown menu for "Print Using"
  10. Select "Generic Post Script Printer" from the dropdown menu
  11. Click Add
  12. Click Continue

NOTE: At the time you print, you will be prompted to authenticate. Be sure to enter your full username, including "".

How to remove a UST printer

  1. Click on the apple icon in the upper left hand corner
  2. Choose System Preferences
  3. Click on Print & Scan
  4. Click the - button to remove a printer
  5. Click on "Delete Printer"
  6. Restart the computer
  1. Verify you are connected to the St. Thomas Wi-Fi network
  2. With the desired document/web page open, go to file print or press CTRL + P to print the screen.
  3. Under the destination, click “Change…”
  4. Change the local destination to your desired printer. There will be an icon on the right letting you know if it is setup for Mobility Print. 
  5. Adjust any additional settings under Options.
  6. Press print.
  7. On the additional pop-up page, go ahead and login with your St. Thomas and password to complete the print initialization.
  8. Go retrieve prints from the printer.




Additional Ways to Print

Off or across campus and want to pick-up your print when you arrive at your destination? Use the following options below to print to a Multi-Function Printer (MFP). 

Students are able to print a document to aFollowMe queue. This allows a user to print a document and it will be held until a user releases it at any MFP (multi-function printer) on campus. 

This allows printing to be secure and eliminates print jobs that are not claimed. A print job is only held for 24 hours, and notifications are sent when it is about to expire.

Setup FollowMe

  1. Verify you have PaperCut installed on your computer per the instructions above
  2. Add the FollowMe Printer
    1. PC (See instructions above)
    2. Mac: (See instructions above)
  3. Wait a few minutes for printer to be set up
  4. Now you can print directly to the FollowMe queue.
  5. Pick up your print from an MFP

WebPrint allows students to print any web browser (great for off campus when you want to pick it up on campus!)

The print job sits in a queue for 24 hours until the user releases it on a campus MFP.

NOTE: only certain file types are accepted through this method: PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint. 

Print your document

  1. Login to your PaperCut User Account
  2. Click on Web Print from the left hand navigation menu
  3. Click on Submit a Job
  4. Select a printer
  5. Click on Print Options and Account Selection
  6. Designate the number of copies you wish to have printed and which account the prints will be charged to (personal or departmental for student workers)
  7. Click on Upload Documents
  8. Click on Upload from Computer
  9. Select which document you would like to print
  10. Click on Upload & Complete
  11. A green bar will appear at the top of your next screen that states your document was successfully submitted. You will be able to check the status in the table below of the print's status.
  12. Pick up your print from an MFP

You are able to print directly at any multi-functioning printer (MFP) by inserting a USB flash drive. 

Note: this feature is only available for documents that are in a PDF format.

  1. Insert USB flash drive
  2. Login to the printer
  3. Click on Retrieve from USB icon
  4. Select the document from list of available files
  5. Click Retrieve from USB icon at the top
  6. When print is complete, press the Home icon
  7. Sign Out

Print from an MFP

If you used FollowMe or WebPrint, you can retrieve your print at any Multi-Functioning Printer (MFP) using the instructions below:

  1. Use your ID card to swipe into an MFP
  2. Press the Print Release button from the touch screen panel
  3. Select the document to be printed
  4. Press the green Print icon at the top of the screen
  5. When scan is complete, click the Home icon
  6. Sign Out
