Software

All institutional purchases of software are managed by ITS. Departments take advantage of price breaks as a result of aggregate buying. University-wide management of software licensing ensures that the university remains in compliance with software copyright laws.

Software for St. Thomas computers

Purchasing software (e.g., Adobe Acrobat, FileMaker Pro, etc.) or engaging with online services (e.g., Survey Monkey, AppointmentPlus, etc.) is easy!

Just contact the Tech Desk and please include the following info:

  • The software title (or service) you would like to purchase (or for which you would like to get more information)
  • Your budget index number
  • The AssetID number of the computer on which you would like the software to be installed.

Software for non-St. Thomas computers

Operating Systems for Home Use

  • Mac OS X: Go to the App Store on your Mac (find it under the Apple menu on your computer), click in the search field in the upper right hand corner, and type in “Mac OS X.”  The first item you see will be a link to the most recent Mac OS upgrade.
  • Windows: Windows 7 (64-bit) is available for checkout from OSF or Keffer Library.

‌‌Mathematica

Mathematica montageMathematica is a symbolic mathematical computation program made by Wolfram.  To download Mathematica, go directly to Wolfram's website here and enter L3125-9187 in the box where it asks for the Activation Key. 

‌Microsoft Office (Office 365)

As a member of St. Thomas, you have access to download the full and latest Microsoft Office suite on up to 5 personal devices. You can also access online programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from your web browser and mobile devices. 

Simply login at office365.stthomas.edu with your email and password to get started.

SAS JMP

Sas JMP combines powerful statistics with dynamic graphics, in memory and on the desktop. SAS JMP Pro 13 is available for download for faculty/staff and students.  Instructions on downloading and the necessary installer files for both Mac and PC are located here.

Minitab example of statistical analysis‌Minitab

Minitab is a statistical software tool designed for easy interactive use and for analyzing research data.

**NOTE: Minitab 18 is only available for the Windows operating system, but Minitab Express does work on both Mac and Windows computers.

Install Minitab 18

  1. Read instructions here for the Minitab 18 installation.
  2. Then, click here for the Minitab 18 installer file.

Minitab for Mac

Minitab Express for Mac

  1. Click here for the Minitab Express installer file.
  2. Before installing the software, be sure to open and read the file named “installation-instructions.txt”.
  3. Click on the file labeled “minitab-express-mac.zip” to download it (save it to your desktop).
  4. Then double-click on it to unzip the file to a folder.
  5. Inside that folder you'll find the Mac software installer.

In the event that Minitab Express does not automatically launch as expected, review the installation-instructions.txt file and make sure you’re following the directions. 

Update Minitab Express

Download your updated Minitab Express license file for Mac.

You'll see a file called "minitab-license-file.zip"

  1. Control-click on the file and you’ll see a pop-up menu.  Then click on “Save target as…” or “Save link as…”  Hold down the Command key and press the D key on your keyboard.  Click “Save” to save the file to your Mac’s desktop.
  2. Next, hold down the Command key and press the spacebar once.  Type in the word “desktop.”  Select “Desktop” from the folders section (the icon will have a small picture inside) and double-click on it.  You’ll then see your Mac's desktop.
  3. Find the file called minitab-license-file.zip, and double-click on it; it will automatically extract the file to the desktop folder.
  4. Launch Minitab Express again.  When Minitab Express asks you where the license is, navigate to where you saved the .lic file (Desktop -> minitab.lic).  Minitab Express should accept the file – and you’re all set!

  1. Click here for the Minitab Express installer file.

  2. Next, hold down the Windows key on the keyboard (the key is between the Ctrl and Alt keys on the lower left part of the keyboard).  Now press the E key.
  3. Click on the Desktop icon on the left side of the screen and find minitab-license-file.zip.
  4. Right-click on the file and you’ll see a pop-up menu.  Then left click on “Extract All…”
  5. Click the Extract button
  6. Launch Minitab Express again.  When Minitab Express asks you where the license is, navigate to where you saved the .lic file (Desktop -> minitab-license-file -> minitab.lic).  Minitab should accept the file – and you’re all set!
