Paul J. Wojda, Ph.D.

Biographical Information

Associate professor of theology in the University of St. Thomas since 1992, Dr. Wojda teaches in the area of moral theology, with a special interest in biomedical ethics.  Dr. Wojda is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he received a B.A. in Government and Political Theory in 1984.  He holds a Masters degree (cum laude) in religious studies from Yale University Divinity School (1987), and a doctorate in moral theology from the University of Notre Dame (1993).  His doctoral dissertation examined the relationship between moral authority and martyrdom in the Christian tradition.


In addition to his duties at St. Thomas, Dr. Wojda has served as Chair of former Archbishop Harry Flynn’s Biomedical Ethics Commission, and is a member of the board of directors of the Institute for Basic and Applied Research in Surgery, a non-profit foundation affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School.  He has served as an ethics consultant to Catholic Health Initiatives, the country’s largest Catholic healthcare provider, as well as on the perinatal bioethics committee of Hennepin County Medical Center.  He also served as a member of the National Marrow Donor Center’s Institutional Review Board.


Over the past decade and a half, Dr. Wojda has led groups of St. Thomas students on various study-abroad trips, most notably to Ukraine (Janueary 2006), Rome (Spring 2010), and Poland (January 2012). In each case students explored the intersections between society, politics, and the Church, a longstanding interest of Dr. Wojda’s.


Dr. Wojda’s scholarly articles and reviews have appeared in the Encyclopedia of CatholicismPro Ecclesia, Word and World, The Annual for the Society of Christian Ethics, Theology Today, and elsewhere.


Dr. Wojda lives in St. Paul with his wife, Keely, and their five children, Clare, Paul, Matthew, Catherine, and Lucy.  He is a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church.
