January 22, 2016

On January 21, 2016, the University of St. Thomas formally named Professor Neil Hamilton the inaugral holder of the Holloran Endowed Professorship. This endowment was graciously made possible by a $1 million pledge from Medtronic in honor of Tom Holloran's longtime leadership of the company as CEO and as a member of the Board of Directors. The professorship is to be held by the Director of the Holloran Center.

The dean's letter appointing Professor Hamilton noted that he has made a substantial mark in the field of legal ethics, becoming the leading scholar helping legal educators understand how the formation of professional identity occurs and why it matters to law students. His award-winning new book, "The ROADMAP," has the potential to reshape how law school's prepare students for future meaningful employment. Finally, Professor Hamilton excels with students. In each of his courses, he receives very high student evaluations. And his course in Ethical Leadership, in particular, becomes for many students a life-changing exeperience.

Two nationally prominent scholars – both professors at large research universities – reviewed Professor Hamilton's scholarship. Here are excerpts from their conclusions:
  • “Professor Hamilton is richly deserving of an endowed professorship in professional formation. He is in a league by himself. I cannot overstate how lucky we are to witness this contribution to legal education. This is a story that ought to be included in any credible narrative of the history of legal education. Fortunately, the story of legal education is bound to be brighter because of Neil Hamilton’s extraordinary and unprecedented contributions.”
  • “Any law school faculty would be fortunate to have Professor Hamilton among its ranks. An endowed professorship is a fitting recognition for his many contributions to your school, the legal profession and the communities we serve.”
