Core Requirement

The History Department offers eight 100-level courses for the non-major in fulfillment of the Historical Studies component of the core curriculum.

  • HIST 111 Origins of the Modern World to 1550
  • HIST 112 The History of the Modern World since 1550
  • HIST 113 Early America in Global Perspective
  • HIST 114 The Modern U.S. in Global Perspective
  • HIST 115 The World Since 1900
  • HIST 117 Latin America in Global Perspective
  • HIST 118 The Middle East and North Africa in Global Perspective
  • HIST 119 East Asian Civilizations in Global Perspective

These courses are introductory-level surveys, but they do more than simply impart historical information. They also teach important skills that are foundational for an excellent liberal arts education, including critical thinking and analytical reading and writing skills. 

Here are the learning objectives for courses that satisfy the core requirement in Historical Studies:

  1. To teach basic methods of historical inquiry and analysis of sources;
  2. To increase knowledge of the history of the modern world and its origins;
  3. To raise awareness of diversity within human history and the importance of intercultural learning;
  4. To address issues related to the professional ethics of historians and the ethical use of historical materials.

The organizing theme of these courses is “Contact and Change,” which affords students an opportunity to examine two of the principal challenges facing historians and anyone who wants to better understand the world in which we live: accounting for change and understanding people and societies separated from us by space and time.

In order to have a study abroad course considered for fulfillment of the core requirement in Historical Studies:

  • Review your options and identify courses that are taught from within the discipline of history—i.e. they have a HIST or HST prefix—and cover a wide span of history or a large geographic area and have a significant multicultural or global component. Insofar as possible, it should also meet the learning objectives described above.
  • Send an email or make an appointment with the chair of the History Department to have your course selections reviewed. You will need the course descriptions, course syllabi (if available), and your Study Abroad pre-approval form.
  • Study Abroad course transfers must be approved before you begin your travel. Contact the Study Abroad/International Education Center for more details.

Occasionally students who are currently enrolled at the University of St. Thomas inquire about fulfilling their Historical Studies core requirement at a local community college or at a college or university near home during the summer.  Such requests must be approved in advance. We will not review transfer courses that are taken without prior approval.

In order to have a community college course considered for fulfillment of the core requirement in Historical Studies:

  • From the offerings of the college or university that you wish to attend, find a course or courses that closely conform to the course descriptions of the 100-level courses listed above. 
  • For each request, obtain a current course syllabus from the instructor of the course that you wish to transfer to UST. E.g., if you are requesting pre-approval for a Summer 2019 course, you need to obtain a Summer 2019 syllabus from the instructor who will be teaching the course.
  • The 100-level learning objectives described above must be clearly addressed in the course readings, assignments, and classroom activities of the syllabus. It is not sufficient for them simply to be listed among the course objectives. 
  • Online and hybrid courses will not be accepted in fulfillment of the core requirement in Historical studies. 
  • Once you have the syllabi in hand, make an appointment with the chair of the History Department to have your transfer course options reviewed. 
  • When you come for your appointment, bring a copy of the transfer credit pre-approval form and your course description(s) and current syllabus or syllabi.

Please note that the Transfer Credit Tool located on the Admissions website does not apply to students who have already matriculated to the University of St. Thomas.

Also please be aware of UST’s policy about post-matriculation transfer credits:

Students who first become degree-seeking at St. Thomas beginning with the Fall 2013 semester and for all subsequent semesters may count a maximum of 8 additional transfer credits taken after the date of matriculation at St. Thomas toward core requirements, with no more than 4 of those credits counting toward any one core requirement area (for instance, Language and Culture or Literature and Writing). This limit applies only to post-matriculation transfer credits and therefore does not apply to courses taken through a UST study abroad program or through the ACTC.
