Admissions Information by Program

Non-Degree and Continuing Education Admissions

If you are not certain if you want to pursue a degree in counseling, you may enroll in a non-degree course first. If after completing from one to three non-degree courses you apply to and are accepted into the MA in Counseling Psychology program, you can apply those course credits to your MA program. Graduate School of Professional Psychology policy allows MA students to apply no more than nine non-degree credits to the MA program.

Apply for free by filling out our short online application and submitting an official transcript showing completion of your bachelor's degree.

Licensees (LPC or LPCC) needing to complete graduate-level coursework (up to 12 credits) for the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy (BBHT) can meet this requirement by enrolling in a wide array of courses. Advantages for a licensee taking one or more of these courses from the University of St. Thomas include:

Instruction by core and adjunct faculty who practice in the field of mental health
Connected to a strong network of diverse students, faculty, and alumni

Application process:

Meet the basic requirements:
Prospective students must have completed a M.A. in Counseling Psychology or related field from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency.
Meet the supplementary requirements:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) required for any candidate whose primary language is not English.
Submit the following application materials:
- Completed application form (choose "Licensure" for degree and "Licensure in Counseling Psychology" for program)
- Official degree awarded undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unless degrees were issued by the University of St. Thomas).
- Submit transcripts to: gradadmissions@stthomas.edu or

- One recommendation letter

Eligibility for these awards is based on information provided in your application. There is no separate scholarship/grant application. Award notices are sent after acceptance to the program.

CARE More is a non-profit created by CARE Counseling, a leading Twin Cities mental health provider co-founded by University of St. Thomas alumni Dr. Andrea Hutchinson and John Hutchinson, MBA. The CARE More Fund was established to help cover the cost of textbooks for graduate-level students who are underrepresented in the field of psychology.
