Professional Development Resources for Geoscientists
Departmental support for student professional development opportunities
The Geology Department is committed to supporting its majors in their professional development efforts. The department has a limited source of funds to support these efforts. Students may apply for a grant to pay for legitimate professional development activities that will assist them in their career goals. Awards will be made on the basis of available funds, rationale for the use of the funds, and academic achievement of the applicant. Funds may be used for:
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Training. This is a course in hazardous waste handling and response that is often required for jobs in environmental consulting
- Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Exam. This is the initial exam on the path to becoming a Certified Professional Geologist. The ASBOG FG examinations are administered twice a year, generally the first Friday in March and the third Friday in October. Check the link here for updated information.
- Discipline-specific field courses, workshops, or short courses offered by other institutions.
