“I'm at Rice University in Houston, Texas earning a Master of Music in Voice Performance, expected graduation in 2016.

St. Thomas helped me prepare for graduate school in many ways. My voice teacher, Dr. Alan Bryan, inspired me to pursue singing and gave me the foundation upon which I can build a career. He challenged me to be a better musician and provided me with the fundamentals of a solid vocal technique. Moreover, his mentorship during my time at St. Thomas was absolutely invaluable. I hope I can one day make the impact on a student that he made on me.

Although I only knew him for two years at St. Thomas, Steve Cole, one of my advisors and professors, challenged me to grow into a responsible adult and taught me how to sell my product--myself--in the most efficient and effective way. The things I learned in his classes and in our conversations are the exact same things that professional singers and others working in the opera industry have since brought up as things that everyone should know and do. It never ceases to amaze me how insightful and "right on the money" he was.

My other professors across every department were very supportive of my musical pursuits outside of St. Thomas, working with me to make up tests and notes that I missed due to performances outside of school. Since virtually all of my operatic work was done outside St. Thomas, they just as easily could have said "No" and forced me to miss opportunities, but I never once had to turn down a job due to school conflicts. I am forever grateful to them, especially Dr. Angela Broeker, for encouraging me to find performance opportunities in the Twin Cities and attending those performances when possible.

St. Thomas may not have any operatic performance opportunities on its campus, but the incredibly supportive nature of the faculty made it possible to make my own opportunities happen and nurtured me to the point that I am able to attend one of the top conservatories for voice in the world and have a career doing what I love--singing.”
