Sarah had some uncanny St. Thomas connections that contributed to her volunteer experiences at VIDA Volunteer, a medical, dental and veterinary based volunteer group in Central America.

“I found out about VIDA through my overnight host, the Tommie Ambassador I stayed with when I was visiting St. Thomas. We stayed in touch and I noticed through Facebook that she went on some kind of volunteer trip. She told me that the founder, Sondra Elizondo, is a Tommie who received a St. Thomas Humanitarian Award. Right then, I knew I was going to be in good hands, so I signed up for my first trip to Nicaragua. In the past year, I’ve been on three separate trips with plans to return upon graduation. After my initial trip, I became a campus coordinator and planned a spring break trip for St. Thomas. Each trip has provided me with a fantastic experience learning about dentistry in a technical sense and in a public health aspect. Working alongside Nicaraguan dentists taught me how common problems in other countries are handled to best provide for their communities.”

Sarah is currently applying to graduate schools and plans to study Dental and Public Health.
